Henning Klöter (Bochum)
The term “Greater China” is a convenient, albeit not uncontroversial label for mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Singapore. In the first part of my talk, I will provide a brief overview of the spread of Chinese and non-Chinese scripts in the places. In the second part, I will compare the status of alphabetic and Chinese orthographies in Mainland China and Taiwan from the perspective of language planning and language ideology. It will be concluded that the terms “digraphia” and “diorthographia”, fairly established in sociolinguistic literature, are insufficient when applied to the contested status of scripts and orthographies in Greater China over the past decades.
